MM Group

What is ‘The MM Group’?

The Melbourne Marathon Group has been formed through friends who have set themselves a challenge, the Melbourne Marathon on 10th of the 10th 2010!

Who makes up this group?

  • Paul Genovese
  • Emma Croager
  • Shannon Matzelle
  • Steve Pratt
  • Mike Smith (not the normal Michael Smith)
  • Alex Coghlan

And in detail….

Paul Genovese
Age 34
Longest Run: Half marathon
MM2010 target time: 3:30hrs
A social runner for a few years I finally decided that if I’m ever going to run a marathon the time is now!  That decided, I thought I’d chose a course a little more exciting than Perth – so Melbourne here I come!  Training solo can be tough so I roped a few others into my crazy quest. Not content with just crossing the line we’ve gone against popular advice and set a target time – an ambitious (for us) 3 and a half hours.

Steve Pratt
Age 35
Longest Run: Half marathon
MM2010 target time: 3:30hrs
Steve is the main instigator of our regular ‘run club’, coercing a group of drinkers to become regular runners.  Likes to enter events under a pseudonym – Iain Pratt.  Something about it being his real name…

Mike Smith
Age 35
Longest Run: 14km
MM2010 target time: Non-Starter – Schedule Conflict
Often seen with 2 brown, furry training partners – Coco and Maisy – who provide regular interval training with their many nature stops.  Citing ‘schedule conflict’ for potentially not competing in the MM, Mike is content with just doing the training.  We just think he’s soft.  Self proclaimed as the fastest Mike Smith in Perth…

Emma Croager
Age 36
Longest Run: Half marathon
MM2010 target time: 4hrs
Emma is the lone female runner of the group.  Emma is far more dedicated than the rest of us, and is guaranteed training companion all year round – even when its 2°, raining and dark.

Shannon Matzelle
Age 33
Longest Run: Half marathon
MM2010 target time: 3:29:59hrs
Always a competitor, Shannon was an easy target to rope into the marathon.  Renown for talking it up, Shannon has been pumping the marathon for many years now.  His main aim – beat Paul, Dan and anyone else he knows that’s run a marathon!

Alex Coghlan
Age 30
Longest Run: Half Marathon
MM2010 target time: 3:30hrs
A stronger swimmer and rider, running was always been that ‘painful leg at the end’ for Alex.  Alex would enjoy beating Shannon, but will need to get out of bed early and on a regular basis for this to occur.   Having a running coach however could change all of this! Excited to part of the ‘team’ Melbourne and looking forward to the spectacle.

Watch this page for more information about the guys & gals as they chase their dream!

  1. You’re right…there is nothing normal about Michael!

  2. Week one out the way and early trouble! Feeling great except for one toe. I think the new shoes are to blame as we aren’t doing that much more than before official training started.

I though the day off on Sunday may have sorted it out but was sore again today. I’ll have to give it a few days which is a bit dissapointing so early in the program. Not to worry I’ll call in an early rest day.

Hope the rest of you are still up and about – enjoy 2xU run tomorrow!

    Paul

  3. Seen the podiatrist and have my foot taped up. Went for 40min run this morning and all is good! So I think I’m back!

  4. Steve, Emma and I did the double bridges for the long run on the early Sat morning shift – Shannon & Alex took the arvo shift (not sure where they ran though).

Week 3 under our belts and all is going well!

  5. Melbourne Marathon 2010 registration is now open!

I’ve put the request in for a team name as there is more than 3 of us. The team name is:
‘Break Your Limits – Get Vibrant!’
and should be up within 24 hours.

For anyone else at BYL keen on the Melbourne Mara, of course you are welcome to join up under this team. You can also join our training sessions too if you need some training buddies! Just let us know and we’ll keep you in the loop on our group run times etc.

Here are our usual run venues:
Monday 6am – UWA Boat Shed Carpark (cnr Hackett & Mounts Bay)
    Tuesday 6am – Ray’s 2xU run
Wednesday 6am – Kings Park starting at Bouchards Cafe (bottom of Mount St)
Friday 6am – City Beach/Bold Park. Carpark south of cnr of Challenger Parade and Marapana Rd.
Saturday – Long Run. Time varies (~sun up) and venue/course usually around the river starting on Sth Perth esplanade cnr Queen St.

All are welcome to share our pain! We look forward to roping others into the challenge.

  6. I’ve registered!!! Race Bib 1701. If only the mara was that easy…

  7. Just spotted this. Myself and a mate are also travelling to Melbourne from Perth for the MM. Best of luck to you all. We’ll be running for Team Redkite and will keep an eye our for you.

  8. Hi. Great to hear we’re not the only ones. There’s a crew of about 10 of us now.

Did you do the C2S? We did the half mara – our times ranged from 1:31 to 1:58. So if you’re in that range chances are there’ll be one of us not too far away!

Are you going for a target time?
