With the Tour due to start in the next 10 hours excitement is building…
With this excitement comes another BYL competition, who will be the BYL Tour De France champion.
SBS and Rabobank are holding a fantasy TDF competion and as such thought it would only be fitting for all those cycling buffs out there to get involved.
It’s easy, just choose 9 riders, 1 team and a bonus stage and you’re away.
I have created a mini-league called BreakYourLimits and the p/word is swimriderun. Enter your team before 10pm WST and you’re away!

One year ago, we sat in earnest glued to the TV to find out who would inevitably be crowned Tour De France champion for 2009. One year later, the Tour rolls round again.
The Tour starts this weekend and for those cycling enthusiasts around us, we can live our dreams through the men that will pedal their way around France. ‘Who will win?’, ‘Who will crash?’, ‘Who will be riding clean?’…. Thankfully the nights wont be as late as the recent world cup matches.
July also effectively marks the start of the new Triathlon season. For those starting to prepare for the Ironman at the end of the year, well, the rest is over and it’s time to start training. Ironman WA is only 4 months away and what better way to start your preparation than riding in the 2C mornings. As part of this Ironman preparation we are again holding a Pre-Ironman Training Camp. This camp will take place in Busselton during the 15-18 October. This year we will be having Mitch Anderson as our guest and ‘live-in’ athlete. He will be joining the group for all sessions so it will be a great opportunity to get up close and personal. We will also be having a ‘live in’ masseuse to get rid of all those creaks in the body. Stay tuned in the next few months though as numbers will be strictly limited!
July also means the first half of the year is over.
We now shift our focus to the next half of the year and if you thought the first half was exciting, the second will be huge. Not only is Ironman on the cards, but the Melbourne Marathon, 100km Dwellingup MTB Classic, City to Surf and a new Australian Duathlon Series. Make sure you get out, start training and get ready to ‘Break Your Limits’!!! All these events will be well and truly represented by the BYL crew and if you need any more info, well this can always be your first stop!

The King of the Mountain should be in everyones yearly race calendar. Particulaly if you like being cold, hills and running in wet shoes for an hour. This year was relatively dry with water levels well below the waist (which trust me makes an enormous difference to your race experience). It is actually a great event and one of the more interesting ones in the Perth race calendar.
As Ray was busy pacing me up the last few hills to take any pictures, I have borrowed some from the WAMC site.

When the smooth talking Mr Pomery spoke these words to Claire and I on that magic day some two and half years ago he failed to mention the correct marital protocol to deal with sickness of one’s spouse in the week before ironman. And me being overcome with joy and excitement (and possibly a little alcohol) failed to ask the question of our all-knowing expert in things marriage and triathlon related. My mistake.
So when Claire came down with a nasty bug earlier this week that has left her bed ridden for the best part of three days, so began a mad search through the fine print of the rules governing our marriage. For those interested, I can tell you that the Commonwealth Government Marriage Act 1961 makes for a fascinating read – all 98 pages of it. But amongst its wordy pages, there is nothing on the subject of pre-ironman sickness and whether such constitutes grounds for divorce or some sort of temporary separation. Surely with the ever-growing popularity of triathlon and in particular ironman, this constitutes a cavernous oversight that our lawmakers ought to amend sooner rather than later.
So with no legislative guidance to be found on the matter. Claire and I resorted to the last option in any good marriage. We talked. We decided that divorce may be just a little over the top (though surely not by much) and that neither of us could be bothered with the paperwork (I thought it paricular unfair to have to do such paperwork in the week before ironman). Besides, the thought of trying to divide up our cd collection that currently resides in our shed in perth whilst both living in france was just too difficult to contemplate.
We decided to resort to option two. We downloaded that Australian Customs Service Quarantine Manual and set about implementing each and every action item in a precise and methodical manner that would satisfy even the sternest of those among our army law-enforcing customs officials.
So the past few days has brough a few small changes to our normal marital life.
All physical contact has been strictly forbidden. Meals have been prepared whilst wearing facial masks and consumed lengthways across the table. Toothbrushes that have been accustomed to living together in the same glass have been relocated so as to be a minimum of two metres apart. And all romantic activities have been curtailed as we have each sought the refuge of sleep from different beds in different rooms. Communication, that other mainstay of marriage, has been limited to skype and facebook messaging only.
So far our zest for rules and regulations appears to be working. We are four days from ironman and I am yet to catch a sniffle. As for the health of our marital life, well yes perhaps we have incurred a little collateral damage but surely it is nothing that cannot be patched up (not before, but after the race of course). As far as I know, Claire still thinks of me of her husband in some vague kind of way. And I too think of her as my (somewhat removed) wife.
If any of you happen to have any communication with Claire, be it by phone, internet or some other such means, please do tell her I love her and that I miss her. And I do hope that she gets better soon. Lord knows, I need someone to help carry my kitbag come race day.

We are now post-marathon and the body is now comtemplating what it next on the horizon. For me personally the target will now become the City to Surf Marathon, a tough marathon but one they came onto the radar just last year. As marathons go, I think this course will be more suited to my size and frame, hilly for the second half, only the strong survive.
A few people have asked whether I was personally happy with the result and yes, I was. Just over 1 minute slower than my PB, but as the marathon is a long way, just ran out of legs in the last 5km. Over the last 6 months the distance has daunted me, so going through this race the focus was to stay mentally strong and I’m happy to stay it worked. (Plus I managed to keep my food down). It’s a little bit of a risk (would it be any different) to back up a marathon only 10 weeks after this one, but the body is feeling ok, albeit a little tired from the adventure a few days ago.
I must say a special thanks to Joe Cleasby, who paced for the first 24km of the event. It was great having him alongside as company through the early stages of the marathon even though he was experiencing pain the whole way. Fully fit he would have come the way!
Results for both the open and relay are now available and overall the team did a great job! Check out the list here:
Relay
As you would have seen from the phots (thanks to Tom) a great day was had by all. Thanks to all who came and supported, it definitely spurs you on seeing all those BYL shirts cheering and running around. Thanks to the drivers on the day, Farrell, Claudia and Carmela!

What does this mean?

Apologies to everyone around the 2.49-2.50 as I was on track for this time until the 37km mark and well, let’s just say it’s a marathon and it started to take it’s toll.
With all that said, the winners of the ‘Marathon Sweepstake’ is :
Prizes can be claimed from the gym and the extra money raised is going to a charity…? Just need some ideas now?
