Tristar… Done!

With a star-studded field, Bill Scanlan has crossed the line in 7th place overall and first M30 age grouper in the inaugural Tri-Star Monaco event.

I will let Bill explain more about the race, but the raw figures are this:

1km Swim – 13.52

100km Bike – 3.03.17

10km Run – 36.14

An amazing race, on a extremely tough course (4 major hill climbs). I received a link from Farrel, which when opened revealed the big man. I’m sure now, all the big boys of triathlon will be on the lookout next time he races.

Congratulations mate on another great result!

All the best Bill!

On Sunday 5th September, Bill Scanlan will be jumping into the richest ocean in the world. Competing in the Tri-Star Monaco triathlon event he will swim, ride and run in one of the most prestigious races on earth. Tri-Star Monaco is a triathlon with distances of 1k swim, 100k ride and 10k run.

He will be competing against some of the biggest names in Triathlon, including Chris McCormack, Marcel Zamora and Olivier Marceau but also quite a few celebrities, including Jenson Button and Alexander Wurz. The F1 street racing circuit will be used as part of the race and with 4 considerable climbs, this isn’t a course for the faint hearted.

From all accounts this is a spectacular course and with the hills surrounding Monaco, this course will be well suited to the big man!

All the best Bill and we will be cheering for you loud and clear from back here!

Check out Tri-Star, but first check the course out… It’s brutal!

Something to look forward too...?

It’s official. While 1st September signifies the start of Spring, this year 1st September 2010 marked the day I went back to the pool. Knowing an Ironman is looming and the fact I have never managed to master the art of running across water, the time has come.

A new pair of goggles and jammers (long speedo shorts) purchased, I was looking quite the part. Some may ask, how do you swim with all that hair, well, it’s easy, with your arms…

Choosing my correct swimming lane was the next challenge, fast (under 50secs), medium (under 60secs) or slow (over 2 hours). Lane choice, medium. (Don’t want to overdo it) Into the pool I entered and suffice to say, the chlorine left the skin feeling a little itchy.

With the ‘hi how you going’ look given to the left, and the ‘yes I’m back look’ given to the right, I was on the way. It was a remarkable comeback to sport, similar to that of Michael Jordan and Michael Schumacher, I was on the way. It didn’t take long to see the first of my many weird pool sightings. Actually 100m to be precise, a middle aged man, a quite hairy wearing white speedos. I realised this is what I’ve been missing!

For now, as my nose keeps running and my body is realigned back to a vertical position I can now tick off swim number one as being complete. Just a mere 49 to go til Ironman!

City to Surf Wrap

With an early morning start of 6.30am, the plan was to rise at 4.00am, eat breakfast and then meet the gang of Tom, Mara and Tim at the gym for the jog to the start line. This all happened, as planned but it also included waking at 10.30pm, 11.30pm, 1.30am, 2.30am and then 4.00am. It’s quite funny whenever you run a marathon (even after 4 in 1 year) nerves still tend to creep up on you when you least expect it.

Needless to say, by the start time of 6.30am I was well and truly ready, a little pumped to be running marathon number 4 and a goal to run hard for the first half and finish even stronger at the end, nothing to be left out on the course! To say the Kenyans and Ethiopians run effortlessly is an understatement. Except the occasional throat gag and sideways spit they are silent. Through the first 10km I got to run with the lead women, after that, for them, it was game on, the surges started and then they just got quicker and went away.

The long and short of the race, running with a solid group of 4 guys I decided to just watch the poetry in motion and run my own race but still keep the pace high. Through the halfway point in a high 1.21, still feeling comfortable and knowing the race was just beginning, it was time to head into the hilling terrain called Kings Park. Up Malcolm street, no worries, Kings Park, no worries. Exit of Kings Park, game over. My quads and hamstrings, felt as if they were being held together by a piece of string and ready to snap at any step. Running down hill wasn’t pleasant. The constant downhill stride and jarring made the last 10kms tough.

Ended up finishing the day in 3.01.

So how does it feel? Well, I wouldn’t be honest to say I wasn’t a little dissapointed, but, it just shows that running in any race, things can change within an instant. You can plan all you like but some days are great, others are a struggle. This was one of those days, but something I realised whilst running, if you keep going, we will all finish the race!

Congratulations to all who finished the tough day, whether it be the 4km, 12km, Half and Full.

A photo from Penticton pre-Ironman...

29th August 2010 also saw the running of Ironman Canada.

Lisa Delaurentis has succesfully finished the event in a time of 10.59.48. On quite a tough course she achieved the result through a swim of 54.27, a cycle of 5.47.36 and a run of 4.09.09.

She registered for the full Ironman and then had to train all through our winter here, which makes this result all the more impressible!

A great result and a holiday to now enjoy!

During the week I was informed of a race happening just round the corner from the house. The Peel District Cycle Club holds road races pretty much every weekend at 2.00pm in the south of Perth. I thought I would go check it out with a view to competing in a few in the lead up to Ironman. Todays race was at Casuarina. Steve Gleeson and a few of his mates were competing in the race and he has now become the first officially photographed BYL member wearing the new gear.

The day is looming, 5 days to be precise, where marathon number 4 for the year will be entered and completed, the City to Surf Marathon. A race of which is only in it’s second year and one I thought I would never run.

A marathon is still a marathon and some would say that this is 3 more than what you should really do for a year. But, too be honest I am feeling quite good. The body has recovered well from the Perth Marathon and I think a good time is in order. The goal at the start of the year was twofold, break my marathon PB time and work on the mental strength needed in a marathon run for Ironman at the end of the year.

I have enjoyed just concentrating on the run and furthermore understanding how the body copes under pressure. Throughout the year I have also changed the approach used to see what happens…Whether it be purely running, running with weight training or running with weight training & cycling. The later has been the focus for the last 6 weeks and we will soon know what works!

There are a quite a few others taking the CIty to Surf adventure this year. The list is growing and I do apologise if I miss your name off:

  • Marathon – Tim Eva, Tom Kroyer, Mara Kroyer and myself.
  • Half Marathon – Melbourne Marathon Group, Paul, Steve, Emma, Shannon, Michael & Alex. (As a side note, the guys and girls are running superbly at the moment), Amy Maloney, Gavin Eva, Darrin Griffiths & Jason Hick.
  • 12km – Joe Cleasby, Sharon Graham, Sherry Robson, Naomi Mills, Sally Ware, Grant Paterson, Imogen Scanlan and quite a few others.

The BYL support crew will also be out in support on bicycles popping up here, there and everywhere. Keep an eye out!

A special mention also, to Steve Gleeson, Adele Richards and Denise Cleasby who will be taking on the lead cyclists role for the Marathon and Half Marathon. THANKS FOR PUTTING YOUR HANDS UP TO HELP!

So, with all that said, all the best to everyone competing and if you have entered and I missed your name off, let me know and we will add it on!

Now for the predicted Marathon time – 2.48.12…. That’s it, it’s out there!
